After a long day of work or school, the last thing I want to do is to test my reflexes, learn complicated combos, or tackle a steep learning curve.
I may be in the minority of Steam users, but I often find myself yearning for games that aren’t mentally taxing. By other “things” I literally mean things, because you can become a blade of glass, a bacteria, a spiral galaxy, or even a subatomic particle. Make Sense of the Worldįrom this point, the main course of the gameplay is to traverse the world while learning how to Sing to other creatures, form a herd by joining similar animals and gaining the ability to shrink or enlarge from one entity to the next in order to see things from differing perspectives in the universe. At its heart, though, Mountain was an eccentric, playful meditation on existence from a narrow field of view-a sort of ontological toybox Everything takes that same sensibility and projects it to the heavens.
Mountain was a polarizing work, the sort of thing that provokes critical debate about what a “videogame” actually is. In the videogame world, though, he’s celebrated as the creator of Mountain, a beguiling and confounding title about the life of a single mountain, suspended in space. Everything is the brainchild of David O’Reilly, an artist and digital creator who’s probably best known for designing the videogame interfaces used in Spike Jonze’s Her.
